The short answer

Why does stucco crack and when does it need repair?

Stucco and plaster crack from settling, freeze and thaw, and water getting behind the coat. Hairline cracks can be sealed, but cracks that let water in, sound hollow or have loose pieces need the damaged area removed and new coats applied over a sound base.

Stucco & Plaster in Greater Boston

Stucco and plaster (what many of our customers call reboco) protect the wall underneath and give it a clean, even finish. Around Greater Boston they show up on house walls, chimneys, garden walls and the exposed part of foundations, where a cement coat called parging covers the block or concrete.

We apply new stucco and plaster and repair coats that have cracked, bulged or come loose. The repair is only as good as what it bonds to, so loose material is taken off first and the surface is prepared before new coats go on.

Signs it is time to call

01

Cracks that keep growing

Water gets in through the crack, freezes in winter and opens it wider every year.

02

Hollow or loose spots

The coat has lost its bond to the wall. Tapping sounds hollow and pieces start to fall.

03

Crumbling foundation parging

The cement coat on the foundation is flaking off and leaving the block exposed.

A crack in stucco looks small. Behind it, water is already getting into the wall.

How it works

03

Apply the coats

Stucco or plaster applied in coats and finished to match the wall.

04

Cure and clean up

Coats left to cure properly, the work area cleaned at the end.

Stucco & Plaster: Frequently Asked Questions

Both are coats troweled onto a wall. Stucco is the term usually used for exterior cement based coats, plaster for interior walls. Parging is the same idea on a foundation wall.
We match the texture and finish as closely as possible. Color and texture on old walls vary, so some repairs are painted afterward to blend in, which we also do.
Cement based coats should not freeze while they cure, so exterior stucco is planned for weather above freezing. Interior plaster can be done year round.
Yes. Parging covers the exposed part of a block or concrete foundation and gives it a clean, even finish.
