The short answer

Should brick front steps be repaired or rebuilt?

If the steps sit level and only some joints or bricks have failed, repointing and replacing those bricks is usually enough. If they tip, crack through, or water has reached the core, the lasting fix is a rebuild on a new compacted base, often with granite treads on top.

Brick & Granite Steps in Greater Boston

Front steps take more punishment than any other masonry on a house. Water runs across them, freezes in every joint, and then gets a coat of rock salt and a steel shovel all winter. On older Greater Boston homes, a lot of brick steps were also built on a thin base that has settled over the decades.

We repair what can be repaired and rebuild what cannot. That can mean repointing and replacing spalled bricks, resetting loose treads, or taking the steps down to the base and building them back with brick or stone risers and solid granite or bluestone treads.

Signs it is time to call

01

Faces popping off the brick

Spalling means water is getting in and freezing. Patching the face alone will not hold.

02

Steps tipping or pulling from the house

The base underneath has moved. That is a rebuild, not a repointing job.

03

Loose or rocking treads

A loose tread is a trip hazard. It needs to be reset in fresh mortar, or replaced.

Granite treads shrug off salt and shovels. Brick and fieldstone give the look. We build both.

How it works

Our Brick & Granite Steps Process

01

Look at the base

We check whether the steps moved, why, and what is underneath before deciding on repair or rebuild.

02

Choose the materials

Brick, granite or bluestone treads, brick or stone risers. We show you what holds up best to salt and ice.

03

Build it back solid

Old material out, a compacted base where needed, then risers and treads set and pointed.

04

Railing and finish

Iron railings reset or replaced as needed, joints tooled, the area cleaned up.

Brick & Granite Steps: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Keeping brick risers and setting granite treads on top is one of the most popular upgrades. Granite does not soak up water the way brick does, so the walking surface lasts much longer through Massachusetts winters.
It depends on the size of the steps and the weather, since mortar needs the right temperatures to cure. We give you a time frame with the written estimate after seeing the job.
Bluestone treads look great and are a New England classic. They do need a good base and proper pitch so water runs off instead of sitting on them.
Cost depends on the number of steps, the width, the material and whether the base has to be redone. Prices vary a lot from job to job, so the honest answer comes after we see them in person.
